CPS on the Rise

About CPS

Chicago Public Schools is the third-largest school district in the nation, with a student body of 361,382 students attending 644 schools across the city (513 district-managed, 121 charter, nine charter, and one SAFE).

CPS is a District on the Rise.

CPS has surpassed the previous year’s graduation rate every year since 2012, growing from a 59-percent graduation rate in 2012 to a record-high rate of 78.2 percent in 2018.

CPS is leading the nation in student growth. A recent look at CPS elementary students’ standardized test scores from 2009 through 2014 compared to national averages among other public schools showed CPS students completing six years of academic progress in a five-year period, more than any other public school system in the country.

“If we as a nation are serious about wanting to improve our schools, we should be studying how Chicago has made such progress.”

Karin Chenoweth, Huffington Post

“Here’s the third-biggest school system in the country that’s dramatically outperforming not just the other big poor districts, but almost every district in the country, at scale.”

S. Reardon, Researcher at Stanford University
